Rainbow Story

Created through a collaboration between the writer and the Arboretum nursery school in Nottingham. The writer used children’s stories and imagination to create a playful interactive performance aimed at primary school children. Within the storyline there was a hidden meaning of….

My concept for this performance was ‘Pathetic Fallacy’, I felt within this performance the stories told inspired a variety of emotions. I felt that set could help display these emotions just like weather does within a film. Where rain depicts sadness, I thought an umbrella could help represent this as the umbrella rises when the rain would appear, and the sadder part of the storyline is displayed and goes down during the happier parts where the sun would be out.

This design inspired by my upbringing and relationship with my grandfather had

a big part to play on the design elements and concept. For this performance ‘pathetic fallacy’

which is a literary device in which human emotions are attributed to aspect of nature such as the weather; played a big part of create the umbrellas’. Weather can be used to reflect a person’s emotions. The umbrellas within the performance help to shield the literal emotions from the world. As this is an interactive performance the centrepiece is based around a tree stump, when the little girl changes the storyline the audience move around the tree stump to a different location where different puppets

are displayed and there’s a different storyline.

The characters are split into finger puppets, glove puppetry an marionette to help keep the attention of the children and to focus in on the storyline.

This Project is about producing theatre for young people and deaf people, with a target age group around 9-11 years old.

This project included workingwith a company called ‘Red Earth’, that “work in two languages: Sign Language -

British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE) and English - They aim to use creative captioning and

audio description to enhance access.” They were able to show us how we could achieve the performance

with the help of puppetry.

The creation of this performance was started off by sharing ideas, discussing them and linking them with my designs on the page. As the storyline is based in a harsh climate my job role was to make that a reality with the set. The use of lighting helps display temperatures, emotions and locations if set is interchangeable flooding it with one colour light to another can help redirect a performance. I used a variety of colours to express the different atmospheres in the different locations of the room. This is an interactive performance for primary school around Nottingham. The aim is to draw people from one location to another this was done using lighting.
